Milford VET WARNS OF FLYING DOGS

Veterinary surgeon, Evan Kosack, of Lennox Head in northern NSW, has spoken out about the importance of using cargo barriers to safely transport dogs in station wagons and 4WDs. He claims most people are unaware of the potential danger to humans and animals in automobile accidents, when the family pet is carried in the cargo area of these vehicles.

"In accidents, the family dog becomes a projectile and it can potentially kill or injure the adults and children in the seating area", says Evan. "Unrestrained pets can also cause accidents by interfering with, or distracting, the driver."

"I've fitted my Subaru Forester all wheel drive wagon with a Milford cargo barrier to show my clients the responsible way to transport their small animals. It's made to the Australian Standard, which is essential. It's easily moved forward to behind the front seats, if I want to carry a longer load, so I have full use of the wagon's space."

Dr Kosack said most dogs weigh from 10 to 60 kg and will not be prepared for the accident when it happens. They lose their footing and fly forward into the vehicle's occupants, with disastrous results. Children have been very badly hurt in this way, in major accidents, but it need not happen.

"Many of my clients use Milford cargo barriers in their 4WD or family wagons, and agree with my recommendations," said Dr Kosack. "Not only is the barrier practical for family pets, but also to safely pack and carry heavy items when moving, going on holidays, making house calls or just doing the weekly shopping. Our family couldn't live without one now."

The cost factor becomes a secondary consideration when people realise the protection that this simple item gives to the family - and their four legged friends. With most Milford cargo barriers costing between $400 and $500 fitted, it's money well spent and for all the right reasons.
